Paul Harris in Britain by Basil Lewis

This is the story of the visits to Britain made by Rotary’s Founder in the years 1928, 1932, 1934 and 1937, based on his own writings and on his reports to the Board of Rotary International.  Details of some of the speeches Paul Harris made to Rotary clubs during these visits are also included.  This account has been compiled with contributions from over 40 Rotary clubs, and is illustrated with pictures, some previously unpublished, from club archives.

The book was produced as a Centenary Project by the Rotary Club of Humberside.  It comprises 108 A5 pages with 11 illustrations, 5 maps, 2 appendices, 2 indices, a bibliography and an epilogue as well as a note from the author and is available from the Club Secretary, Rotarian Geoff Hardaker, 29, Westella Road, Kirkella, Hull, HU10 7QD, England, or from Rotarian Basil Lewis, 1001 Anlaby Road, Hull, HU4 7PN, England.

The cost is £5.  For postal orders within RIBI, please add £1.00 for postage and packing.  For US orders the cost is US$10 plus US$5 for surface mail and US$7 for airmail.  We can only accept cheques that are drawn on a UK bank; these should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Humberside.  We can accept credit card orders.

Basil Lewis joined the Humberside club in 1983 and served for several years as Club Bulletin Editor and Public Relations Officer.  In 1993 he became the District Public Relations Officer and remained in post for 5 years.  During 1996/7 he served as a member of the RIBI Communications Committee.

This study of Paul Harris originated in articles which Basil wrote for ‘Rotary’ in 1997.  In 2002, he became President of the International Genealogy and Heraldry Fellowship of Rotarians, and a Research Fellow for the Rotary Global History Project which is currently putting much of Rotary’s history on to the internet.  He is a Paul Harris Fellow.
