The Community Service Committee is planning a busy year with several events aimed at
raising money for worthwhile charities; providing a programme of events for the young
and not so young while at the same time organising at least one fun event for the Club.
The first of three supermarket-based events will be in February when we'll be holding
a collection at the Waitrose Store at Willerby for the Alzheimer's Association.
The likely date is 7 February 2009.
Then, it is planned to hold what has become an annual collection for the Marie Curie
charity - this will be at the Morrison's store at Anlaby in March.
The third supermarket event will be at the ASDA story on Hessle Road in April.
This will be the annual Stroke Awareness Day when it is planned to give shoppers the
opportunity to have a blood pressure check - courtesy of skilled nurses.
Another important event is the senior citizens night out - this is aimed at the elderly
who don't find it all that easy to get out on a regular basis.
In the coming year we're hoping to extend it to even more people.
Then , of course, there are the games for the disabled.
This is not organised by our Club but we try to give it our full support.
The next District Games for the Disabled will be held in Lincoln and we'll be sending
a group of our members to give a helping hand.
The first of our events aimed at youngsters will be between Christmas and New Year.
It is the under 11's 5 a-side football tournament and will be held at the Haltemprice
Sports Centre on Tuesday December 30.
In previous years this has proved to be a very popular event with ten teams taking part.
In the Spring one of our local schools - and possibly two - will be involved in a story
telling competition with book tokens going to the winners.
Our main fund raiser is the Golf AM-AM and this is down to the sheer hard work put in
by George Tarbotton. It is held each year at the Hull Golf Club.
In addition to the work for others we plan to have a fun night - hopefully at Hull Golf
Club and likely to be in November.
This is another annual event and one that many club member eagerly look forward to.
The highlight is a Basil Lewis quiz (so long as its not too difficult).
The Community Services Committee is also looking at another event at some stage during
the year - so watch out for details.
