Rotary International
The Rotary Club of Humberside is one of over 31,256 Clubs in 164 countries whose one million
plus members share common objectives in fostering high ethical standards in business and the
professions, while, at the same time, initiating and supporting community service projects
locally and internationally.
District 1270
District 1270 is a comparatively new District, founded in 1985. It contains over 1600 Rotarians in 48
clubs on both sides of the Humber Estuary in the UK and to the West of it. The oldest Club is the Rotary
Club of Sheffield followed by the Rotary Club of Hull (both 1920), Rotherham (1921), Doncaster (1922).
Since 1991, nine new clubs have been chartered.
Past District Governor Trevor Butterworth has written “Like the R.I.President, I believe Rotary lives should be
kept reasonably simple ...
and, therefore, maintaining a degree of continuity from previous years work seems a sensible way towards
setting a straightforward path for our future, by focussing on areas where success has been demonstrated in
bringing relief to those most in need of it.”
Past District Governor Les Connell has written that “I will never fail in my belief that Rotary
needs to be directed from the bottom up and all too often do I come across those who feel that they can dictate
to the clubs.
Our team were asked at the outset to be servants to the clubs and not to be dictators and they have followed
this direction.
Please enjoy your Rotary work and make life better locally, nationally and internationally through our great
organisation of clubs.”
District 1270 is the ‘home district’ of Past President of Rotary International, the late Bill Huntley,
who was a member of the Rotary Club of Alford and Mablethorpe.
